  1.         Before you use QuickStar FAX Pro V1.06 HP for first time...
  2.  
  3.     QuickStar FAX Pro is a MS-DOS shareware program which allows you to
  4. send plain text faxes from the DOS command line of your PC computer, using
  5. either a Class 1 or Class 2 fax/modem in your computer that's connected to
  6. a telephone line. QFAX can be used manually to send one fax at a time. Or
  7. it can be called from a batch file or from your own program repeatedly to
  8. send out many faxes to various fax receivers. If you do not have time to
  9. read the whole readme.1st file, please press PageDown and go directly to
  10. the end of this file. There is a QUICK START UP GUIDE for QFAX at the end
  11. of this file. QFAX is created by a member of the Association of Shareware
  12. Professionals (ASP) and is distributed as a shareware program.

  14.     QFAX sends text fax VERY FAST! For a regular 12 full pages text file,
  15. it can be transmitted within 4 minutes at 14400 bps modem speed! That is
  16. MUCH FASTER than what most other fax programs can do! QFAX helps you to
  17. save long distance phone money if you need to send fax from time to time!
  18. It also saves the lifetime of the battery in your HP palmtop.

  20.     QFAX was written mainly as a fax program on regular PCs. But I have
  21. developed this parallel version for HP palmtop computers. This program has
  22. the looking and feeling of a built-in HP palmtop application and is very
  23. easy to use. You can browse through the directory list to select the file
  24. to fax, and then enter fax number, and then you are set to start the fax!

  26.     Before you do any thing else:
  27.     1.Check the completeness of the HPFAX106.ZIP package you received.
  28.       After unzip it you should have the following files:
  29.  
  30.         file_id.diz     A small file describing QFAX (required by BBS's)
  31.         qfax.icn        The QFAX icn file for HP palmtop
  32.         qfax.cfg        The QFAX configuration file
  33.         qfax.exe        The main fax sending program
  34.         qfaxrec.exe     The fax receiver, decoder and converter program
  35.         qfaxconf.exe    Small program to help you to determine the modem
  36.                         port and create customized qfax.cfg file
  37.         readme.1st      The file you are reading now
  38.         usage.doc       The file explaining detailed usages of QFAX
  39.         register.txt    A text file telling you how to register QFAX
  40.         register.frm    Registration form to be used for registration
  41.         miscinfo.txt    Misc notes. About the Author. Where to find QFAX.

  43.     2. The QFAX.CFG may need to be edited and configured to fit the specific
  44.        configuration of your computer. You can either edit QFAX.CFG file by
  45.        using DOS edit, or you can use qfaxconf.exe program to help create a
  46.        customized QFAX.CFG file. You may simply type "qfaxconf" at the DOS
  47.        command line to start. See the USAGE.TXT file for details.

  49.     3. Read the REGISTER.TXT file for the license agreement and statement of
  50.        limited warranty. Simply using QFAX implies that you have read and
  51.        understand those conditions. And you agree to those conditions.

  53.     4. Read the USAGE.TXT for information on how to use QFAX. The usage is
  54.        simple and straightforward but there are still something you want to
  55.        learn before you start for the first time.
  56.  
  57.     If you have done all of the above and have configured the QFAX.CFG file
  58. according to the instructions given in the USAGE.TXT file, you can go ahead
  59. to test QFAX and use it regularly.
  60.  
  61.     If you find QFAX useful to you, please register it with the author. The
  62. REGISTER.TXT tells you the benefit you will obtain from registration and
  63. method of how to register. The registration is simple and cheap!

  65.     If you have any further questions regarding the usage of QFAX that you
  66. can not find the answer from the USAGE.TXT file, do not hesitate to ask the
  67. author. The REGISTER.TXT file has contact information on how to reach the
  68. author.

  70.     QFAX is a shareware program and may be redistributed freely. But there
  71. are some conditions: You must distribute QFAX in its original and complete
  72. and zipped format and you are not allowed to change content of any file.
  73. You are not allowed to distribute QFAX for purpose of profit. No charge
  74. can be made on the distribution of QFAX except for a reasonable charge for
  75. the handling and material cost of the distribution. Under above conditions
  76. please feel free to distribute the QFAX software package.

  99.     Improvements of V1.03 comparing with V1.02 include the following:

  101.       a.Greatly reduced the amount of memory used by QFAX, making it more
  102.         suitable to be called by other programs so the user can construct
  103.         their batch fax sending system.
  104.       b.A fax receive and/or decode program is added to the package.
  105.       c.Some improvement of the fax subroutines.

  107.     Improvements of V1.04 from V1.03 include the following:
  108.  
  109.       a.A memory allocation bug fixed.
  110.       b.Self-check subroutine added to make sure that the program is an
  111.         authentic file. If it is infected by a computer virus or modified
  112.         by a computer hacker, it will give warning.
  113.       c.Added some more configurable parameters, including the Wait For Modem
  114.         Connection Time. The qfaxconf.exe program is improved to include the
  115.         new parameters in configuration of qfax.cfg file.
  116.       d.QFAX104B.ZIP is the same as QFAXV104.ZIP except it stores 8x16 font
  117.         directly in the program. QFAX104B.ZIP can be used on HP100LX/HP200LX
  118.         palmtop computers.

  120.     Improvements of V1.05 from V1.04 include the following:

  122.       a.The memory usage of qfax.exe has been reduced by more than 100 KB.
  123.         So the program is more suitable to be called from other applications.
  124.       b.A few improvements made the Post Page Message more reliable.
  125.       c.The self-check subroutine in V1.04 has been removed to reduce the
  126.         size of the program.

  128.     Improvements of V1.06 from V1.05 include the following:

  130.       a.Improved the fax part greatly so it works more reliably on some USR
  131.         modems and others. Total fax connection time is displayed at the end.
  132.       b.Improvement of the command line interface so it can now be used to
  133.         fax pre-processed fax files and support wild card file names. Now
  134.         multiple files can be faxed together in one fax session.
  135.       c.QFAXREC.EXE has more functions. It can now be used to receive a fax
  136.         call, or convert fax files of ANY format into a PCX file, or into a
  137.         fax file that can be used by QFAX.EXE.
  138.       d.QFAXREC.EXE now takes much less memory to run.
  139.  
  140.       e.A HP palmtop System Manager Compliant parallel version was developed.
